MAP: Where in Connecticut to Find the Most Irish-Americans
It may not lead you to a pot o' gold, but follow the darkest shades of green to find out where the most people with Irish heritage live in the state.
Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, but on the other 364, only the sons and daughters of Erin claim Irish ancestry.
Connecticut has more than 200,000 residents with ancestral ties to Ireland — including people who identified as Irish, Celtic and Sctoch-Irish — according to the American Community Survey (ACS), which makes population and housing estimates using U.S. Census data.
Nutmeggers with Irish heritage represent approximately 5.7 percent of Connecticut’s 3.59 million residents.
Milford has the most people with Irish genes (approximately 8,711), with Norwalk (8,682), Waterbury (8,173) and West Hartford (8,063) not far behind.
By population, however, Georgetown — an area at the intersection of Redding, Ridgefield, Weston and Wilton — has the largest Irish-American community, with more than 28 percent of people claiming ancestors from the Emerald Isle.
