For the Birds!

Margaret Robbins of Wild Birds of Brookfield spoke to the Garden Club on Thursday, January 16.  She talked about how we can help our feathered friends survive the winter.  It was a particularly timely talk given the frigid temperatures and unusual snowfalls we are experiencing!

Robbins said that birds can lose up to 20% of their body weight trying to survive a winter night, and if they don't get sufficient food the next day they can die.  She recommended that bird feeders use fresh seed and avoid fillers - like wheat, barley, milo and millet, that our local birds don't eat. Fresh water, unshelled nuts and normal peanut butter are also a welcome treat.

Robbins pointed out that gardening is Connecticut's #1 hobby, but bird-watching is a close second!

Here is a picture of Robbins addressing the club with a selection of products from her store. Three birdfeeders were raffled off to club members, leaving the rest of us envious.  Thanks Margaret, we really enjoyed having you!
