Dead Man's Cell Phone

Join us for the contemporary comedy Dead Man's Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl and directed by the multi-talented Alica Dempster. Performances are weekends Nov. 16 through Dec. 1, 2012.

The play starts off simply enough: While at a café a man dies but his cell phone will not stop ringing. The woman at the next table answers his ringing phone and is soon playing comforter to the man’s grieving friends and family. Yet this is just the beginning of an intricate and imaginative journey through the dead man's bizarre life and our own assumptions about morality and connection. "You'll never walk alone. That's right. Because you'll always have a machine in your pants that might ring."

The show's director is Alicia Dempster, a lifelong theatre enthusiast with over 30 years of experience onstage, backstage and in the director’s chair. She has helmed several productions in Connecticut including Spring Awakening, Parade, My First Time, Doubt, Little Shop of Horrors, Little Women, Peter Pan, The Diviners, When Pigs Fly, A Few Good Men and How I Learned To Drive. She also co-directed and co-produced Chad Beckim’s play, A Matter of Choice, at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2010. She is the co-librettist of the pop-rock musical Broadway aimed Welcome to My Life (W2ML) with composer/lyricist Bobby Cronin, currently under option with New Vintage Theatricals and Kent/Knudsen Productions. Dempster is currently working on several projects including The 8th Wonder of the World (with Cronin), Fantastique with composer Keiji Ishiguri and the play A Gift of Undetermined Value, which explores the bioethical issues surrounding organ donation by prison inmates. She received her B.A. in Theatre/Musical Theatre from Ohio Northern University, where she has been commissioned to write a new musical during the 2013/14 academic year. Alicia is a member of the Dramatists Guild and resides in Danbury with her husband Bill and their three children, Sabine, Isabelle and Delaney.
