What's your favorite Brookfield nonprofit?

GreatNonprofits.org released today its first ever list of top-rated charities in Brookfield, which Patch.com readers can use to discover top volunteer, giving, and internship opportunities.

Palo Alto, Calif. – Interested in volunteering, giving or interning with a great local charity? GreatNonprofits.org released today its first consolidated list of user-reviewed non-profits in Brookfield, which Patch.com readers can use to discover top-rated charities to give or work with on issues they care about.

“Local giving and volunteering has exploded in recent years,” says Perla Ni, the CEO of GreatNonprofits, which published the list. GreatNonprofits is the leading site for non-profit reviews by volunteers, donors, and clients alike. “Like Shop local, eat local, people now want to get involved with local nonprofits. People are increasingly interested in making meaningful connections in their own neighborhoods and communities.”

Check out this list to find a great non-profit around Brookfield.

This list only contains charities within 10 miles of Brookfield, but you can expand it to include non-profits up to 50 miles away, or you can sort through them by issue and user rating. If your favorite charity is missing from the list, you can create a page for it on GreatNonprofits.org. Then you can write and post a review about it, helping others discover the organization and contribute to this great community resource.  Not only does this provide useful feedback for non-profits, which they can use for self-assessment and improvement, but it serves as compelling evidence about their work, which they can show to donors.

It is also a great way to find out about volunteer, internship, and job opportunities at local charities.

“It’s so rewarding for people to discover on-the-ground, maybe lesser-known non-profits doing great work in their own communities,” said Ni. “Getting involved, volunteering or interning with local charities can be a terrific experience, because non-profits need and appreciate the help. You can get substantive responsibilities and hone real-world skills. And you'll be able to make a difference and see it in your own community!"

The full list over 1 million non-profits, which users can explore using zip code, issue, and rating filters, is available at http://greatnonprofits.org/.

My (2) Favorite Brookfield Nonprofits are Brookfield Volunteer Fire Co INC and Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department, Candlewood Co INC. These 2 organiztions work together everyday to protect life & property in Brookfield and even in the surrounding towns via Mutual Aid agreements. I'm unsure if the residents realize these (2) volunteer organizations save Brookfield taxpayers Millions of dollars annually. I take every opportunity to thank our Towns Fire & EMS Volunteers, and you should as well. I'm Bob Appleby and I approve this message!

My favorite nonprofit is Horse of Connecticut located on Wilbur Road in Washington, Connecticut. Since 1973 they have been saving horses from abuse and neglect. They are a privately funded 501C3 organization and ALL funds go directly to the care of the horses. They are a wonderful organization. Their volunteers work tirelessly to keep the horses in their care well. They offer an adoption program. They are always looking for volunteers and it's a great place to take children, bring some carrots and make some friends.

As I look through the list of all the wonderful Nonprofit organizations in the area two in the town of Brookfield stood out to me as organizations I would really love to support. The first, is the Coalition For Suicide Awareness. The other is Friends of Brookfield Senior Center. Both of which are valuable to the town of Brookfield.
My favorite Nonprofit organization in the surrounding area is the Dorothy Day Hospitality House located in Danbury, Connecticut. They work tirelessly to feed our local hungry and homeless community. In our country over 48 Million Americans go hungry. That includes over 16 Million children suffering with pangs of hunger. Unfortunately, the numbers are growing with our declining economy. The Dorothy Day Hospitality House helps to feed our hungry community as well as give personal care items to those in need. They are a pillar of community care in our area.

I like The HANDY DANDY HANDYMAN. Not only do they do great work (like all these wonderful organizations) but many of their projects bring our community together in group activities.

My favorite non-profit is St. Joseph's church & school at the corner of 25 & 133. Offering spiritual healing and education learning, they exemplify all that there is in being a leg on the table we call community alongside the Congregational and Episcopal church all in Brookfield historic district. These form the trinity in which lies the origins of the community.

UPDATE on Norma, lost dog in Newtown: Carolee Mason (Newtown's Animal Control Officer) is watchingRead More her from a distance at the moment, armed with catfood to tempt her closer. The foster mom is on her way there again, this time with chicken, and Laura is on her way with hamburger. Problem is, this dog is VERY shy, skittish and quick to run away.
