Brookfield HS Football Team Unmasked, the real story

The BHS Football team can be a lesson to all of us. They have had a great season, including last night’s 22 – 21 victory over Bethel in the quarter finial State Championship game. Why is this team so successful, it’s simple? It starts with the coaches that teach the kids they are part of something bigger than themselves. The kids know that their coaches care about each one of them but that each one of them has to prove themselves each week.

Then you have the players that play not for themselves but for each other. I have heard my son Zach come home and say, “I have to protect my quarterback; I have to make sure he doesn’t get hurt”. “We have to win this game for the coaches; they work hard for us”. I hear his friends in the car talking about what a great player this kid or that kid is on the team, never talking about themselves yet each one is a great player themselves, but when talking about themselves its always about how they can improve the next time. Then take into account that they never (And I mean never) give up. Last week they lost to Bethel 20 – 0, in last night’s game they were behind most of the game, but they did not give up. They left it all on the field each kid giving it their all and it paid off. When those kids got off the bus, you knew that they had nothing left, they gave it their all but each and every one of them vowed to be ready for Saturday.

Next you have the parents like Kristen Joshi volunteering her expertise and taking magnificent photographs of the kids, Sue Allen, Angela Reich and others doing the Booster Club.

Last but by far not least, you have the Bomb Squad and the other BHS students who come to every game to cheer their team on. They are so effective that one team attributed their lost in part because the energy radiated by these kids shook his players; another team gave up home field advantage because of the same concern. The Bomb squad has a motto when it comes to this team, “WE BELIEVE” and this motto has carried over to the parents.

There can be no greater lesson in what this team, their coaches, the parents and the fans have done and I can assure you that these lessons will take these kids far in life as long as they never forget these lessons and they always
believe.
