Getting Back Into the Groove After Vacation

Our boys always had such a tough time with transitions....with everything from leaving the house to playing to homework.  The hardest was coming back from vacation, and getting back in to a routine.  It took weeks for things to be "normal" again.

Children crave a sense of routine.  It gives them a calm, peaceful way to be.  One of the ways you can help them (and yourself!) is to work together to create routine charts.  These are not done FOR your child, they are done WITH your child.  You start with brainstorming a list of things that need to get done, like brush teeth, get dressed, eat breakfast, pack backpack, etc. for getting ready on a school morning.  They then create a chart in the order they do these things.  If they seem to be stuck in the morning, you simply ask, "What is next on your routine chart?"  The chart becomes the guide, and really makes for more peaceful transitions.
