Brookfield Father, Son Bringing Back Community Store

Local contractors were hard at work Tuesday renovating the former Brookfield Market just east of Four Corners into the new O'Donovan's Brookfield Market, slated to reopen later this summer.

The new market and deli is being opened by 18-year Brookfield resident John O'Donovan and his son, Sgt. John O'Donovan, just returned home from a tour in Afghanistan.

The father-son team will have the support of the whole family, including mother Cindy and sisters Megan and Alysa.

"We want to bring back the community store," the elder O'Donovan said Tuesday as workers laid down a new wood floor. The plan is to hire all local people to work in the store, as well, he said, from the deli to the cashiers to the renovation crews.

When it opens — expected for early August — the shop will offer groceries, home goods and local produce, as well as sandwiches and prepared foods at the deli counter. There will also be a suggestion box for patrons to make requests.

The kitchen will be manned by 20-year Brookfield resident Joe Choniski, who spent time as a chef at a country club in North Salem before enrolling in Cornell's hospitality program. The market will be managed by Joe Zanno, a long-time resident and former postal worker.

Along with the new O'Donovan's Brookfield Market, father and son team will also open the adjacent liquor store under a new name: J&J Fine Wine & Spirits.
