Medical Marijuana: A Pharmaceutical Industry and Regulatory Perspective

In light of the Zoning Commission's upcoming public hearing on the potential for a moratorium on medical marijuana in Brookfield, I thought I would provide a link to an article on the subject that I wrote for pharmaevolution.com in late August of this year.

The article reviews the status of marijuana in the growing number of states, including Connecticut, where the drug has been made legal for medicinal purposes. The potential therapeutic benefits of some of the ingredients in marijuana are reviewed as well as the role of the pharmaceutical industry and the regulatory and enforcement arm of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The article also reveals the contradictory role of the federal government—on the one hand allocating funds to study the drug's potential contribution to easing symptoms of some debilitating illnesses, while claiming the drug has "no accepted medical value" and continuing to classify marijuana as a Class I drug along with heroin, LSD, ecstasy and others.

Note, if you read the article, please see my update on page 2 of the comments.
