Watermark University Spring 2013 Courses Available to Southbury-Area Seniors

The Watermark at East Hill is pleased to announce its Watermark University Spring semester is now underway, with course catalogs available to seniors living in the Greater Southbury area. Watermark University is a continuing education program that features diverse topics and programs designed to keep seniors’ minds and bodies fit. All of the classes are held at the retirement community, located at 611 East Hill Road in Southbury.

 

“Watermark University is a great way for seniors in our area to stay active and to participate in new and exciting activities,” said Melody Floyd, Community Life Director at The Watermark at East Hill. “Whether you are interested in food, exercise or art, we have something for everyone. We encourage everyone to come see how The Watermark is helping our residents and guests thrive.”

One Watermark University course is “A Matter of Balance,” a nationally-recognized program designed to reduce the risk of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. The class will be held every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. from February 19 through April 9 and will be led by Melody Floyd and Mona LaBissoniere, Health Educator for the Pomperaug District Department of Health.

Another class is “Healthy Living with Good Nutrition,” held on Thursday, February 13 and Thursday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m. The class will address how whole food nutrition plays an active role in everyday health. Instructor Cathy Smedberg will also provide recipes and samples for quick, easy and healthy cooking. Smedberg is a wellness educator from Woodbury with a passion for spreading knowledge about healthy and active lifestyles.

 

“Drawing What You See” is also available for people looking to learn the basics of art and drawing. The class will be held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. with instructor Clare Chapman, an award-winning artist from Woodbury who is currently completing her Master’s Degree in Art Therapy from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven. Chapman will discuss various materials and techniques used to help novice artists.

 

Other spring class topics include technology, history and religion. Most Watermark University classes are free of charge and open to the public by reservation only, including the three highlighted above.
