Brookfield Girl Scout Earns Gold Award

Brookfield Girl Scouts are proud to announce Rosie, an Ambassador Girl Scout, has earned a Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest award available to Girl Scouts. To earn the Gold Award, girls must find a community issue they would like to resolve. After 80 hours of work, the solution to the community problem will have a sustainable resolution. For her Gold Award project, Rosie brought a composting system to Huckleberry Hill Elementary School in Brookfield. The root cause of the issue was improper waste management in the school regarding food waste, and the fact that children weren’t aware of the negative impact their waste has on the environment. Introducing composting was a perfect way to address both of these issues. She decided to educate children and adults about composting through an assembly teaching 600 students about composting and its benefits, three science classes regarding composting and how it relates to gardening, an event familiarizing volunteers with the composting process, and an event promoting composting, including a fun trash sorting game she created. A composter was donated and the school is using it , and the soil will be used in "Hucks Paw Patch" As a result, all students at Huckleberry are aware of composting and its importance in our society. "I believe they are equally as enthusiastic as I am to help our Brookfield School system become more sustainable as a community", states Rosie. Congratulations, Rosie, on earning your Gold Award!
