BFYF Patriots go Undefeated and win Northern Conference Championship

It was August 1st, the day that started what is now an outstanding undefeated season having culminated in a Northern CT Pop-Warner Championship for the BFYF Patriot Division team.  This group of 20+ boys started out in early August with a focus and a determination to be the best football team that they could be.  This group of 7th and 8th grade boys, mostly from Brookfield, but with a couple key pieces from New Milford has lit the Patriot division on fire.  They came out of the gate with a purpose, a new look offense and some pretty stout competitive leadership.

Led by Head Coach Dave Cacace, and Coaches Kyle Sanborn, Tim Bomba, Paul DelGardo and Mark Destefano the boys have completed the regular season with a perfect 8 wins and no losses.  They were the top seed in the Northern Conference and played in the conference championship recently.  The boys once again triumphed in this contest with a hard fought battle culminating in a 38 – 8 win over the combined Bethel/New Fairfield team.  They have earned a berth in the CT State Championships vs. the Southern CT Pop Warner Champs – the West Haven Seahawks who are also undefeated in 2013.

The Offensive backfield combination of QB John ‘JJ’ Garizio, RBs Nate Capriglione, Kyle Sanborn, Jack Bomba, Liam Carroll and speedy Sam Jackson – ran hard and strong all season long, gaining yards almost at will.  This was all made possible by the outstanding play by the powerful front line made up of Alex Destefano, Mark Havira, Nick Mascolo, Cole Brewer, Conner Dinho, CJ Francis ,Ed Goulart, Marc Coneybear, Richard Mitchell, Ryan Tombline and  Matt Cacace, with TEs Varisht Nellicherry, Mike Scribner, and Mike Haggerty.

On the defensive side of the ball, these boys have been equally impressive having limited their opponents to at most 2 touchdowns per game – and that only happened once the whole season.  The stout front line was led by Cacace, Havira, Francis, Tombline, Dinho, Mitchell, Coneybear, Goulart, and Destefano with Defensive Ends Brewer, Jackson, Haggerty and Nellicherry .  The linebacking core of Capriglione, Garizio, Nick Comizio, and Mascolo have wreaked havoc against opponents all year.  The secondary, led by Bomba, Sanborn, and Carroll, with help from Haggerty and Scribner,  have broken up passes and provided a great backdrop to the front line – very little has gotten by them all year.

Special teams has been highlighted by the strong kicking game off of the feet of both Mike Scribner and Nick Comizio – proving the differentiator in plenty of games.

The versatility of the squad has enabled the boys to be moved around in various different positions, countering various injuries and further enabling the coaches to make some diverse play calls and change things up proving difficult for their opponents.

These boys have grown as young men and as teammates.  Come watch their attempt at capturing the CT State Title and the opportunity to get one step closer to the Regional Championships to be held at Disney World, Florida in early December.  It all starts over this weekend at West Haven’s Veterans Memorial Park, The Ray Tellier Midget Football Field located at 91 Bull Hill Lane in West Haven, CT.  Game time is 4:00pm, come out and support the Patriot Division team in their quest for the state title.  This game is sure to be a good one.
