New degree of pizza

Twice last week I sped on foot through the alley past Fifty Coins and next to where The Gap was, now a dance studio.

I miss my weekly shop stop in Ridgefield. But I noticed a building near my parking spot in the rear lot.

Curious but in my hurry to CVS I neglected to find out about its occupants.

Then Sunday I learned from a family member. He chose 850 Degrees Wood Fired, "a new pizza place," for our Sunday dinner.

"Where?" I asked. "The new building behind Main Street."

So we met at 5 o’clock and since neither of us had eaten all day eagerly each ordered our own pies.

Personal, 12-inch ones I mean, a size for ordinary appetites with a smidgen extra to offer a sample to your dining partner.

Today when posting this I checked the website and realized the pizza establishment is owned by Larry Debany, whose Fifty Coins http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/Pub-inspired-family-dining-at-Fifty-Coins-3714085.php was the topic of a story I wrote a couple of years ago.

Like coins, 850 is homey though the wood and sleek bar are gleaming new. There is a two-sided dining space – the bar section has a TV and we were cozily situated in this section. Another area is quieter and appealing as well.

Meanwhile, the fare is exceptional with choices, including “traditional NY style” pizza with cheese, chicken parm, buffalo chicken, pesto chicken and mac and cheese, among toppings; and an “ultra-thin” variety, also 12-inch but obviously lighter.

Among unusual finishes for either style are garlic mashed potatoes with light mozzarella, cheddar and red onion; also smoked salmon with dill Havarti, capers, onions and crème fraiche.

What’s nice about the menu at 850 Degrees, which offers a slew of beers and wine, is the suggestions of how to pair the latter; white Moet Chandon champagne or Colavita pinot noir were considered choices for the salmon pie.

There are also starters, salads and pasta too.

I ordered the ultra-thin crust with pistachio, honey truffle oil which sweetly tempered the goat cheese topping on the pie, along with creamy, smooth ricotta swirls.

If you try it, go to 425 R. Main Street Ridgefield – R means rear – knowing there’s plenty of parking next to the building and throughout the lot.
