How to Claim Your Business Listing on Patch [Video]

Claiming your listing gives you extra bonuses.

When Brookfield Patch launched in March 2010, editors and contributors ventured to local businesses to collect information for our directory. The result: Patch Places. Patch Places is the spot to find descriptions, hours, accepted payment methods and more for spots around town. You can even see what your neighbors think of a business before you try it or write your own review. But local businesses get extra bonuses when they claim their free listing. Owners or managers can sign in and search for their business. Underneath the photos, there is a box with the question: Do you own or manage this location? Claim it! Just click Claim it! and a form will pop up asking for contact information and authorization to claim it. Within a few days, …

Include Your Voice in Four Corners Vision Planning

Land Use and FHI are asking interested residents to join focus groups to develop new vision for Four Corners.

The town of Brookfield signed a contract with planning firm Fitzgerald and Halliday Inc. (FHI) mid-January to begin the process of designing a vision for the intersection of Federal Road and Whisconier Road, known locally as Four Corners or the Town Center District (TCD). A major component of the process, and one of the main reasons FHI was chosen over other firms, will be public participation, in the form of public information sessions, taste surveys and focus groups made up of specific interest groups. As means of achieving this last goal, the town, and in particular Community Development Director Katherine Daniel, is asking interested residents and stake-holders to contact the Brookfield Land Use Department to let the town know they …

House Speaker: Minimum Wage Hike to Stimulate Economy [POLL]

Some support an increase, while others traditionally argue that it hurts small businesses. What do you think? Participate in our poll.

The following is a press release: House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan (D-Meriden) joined Democratic legislators, labor leaders, a small business owner and minimum wage workers Tuesday to propose an increase in Connecticut's minimum wage, and said legislation to be proposed in the 2012 session will call for indexing the wage to keep pace with the rising cost of living and give employers predictability on their labor costs. The proposal calls for Connecticut's current minimum wage of $8.25 per hour to be raised to $9 per hour this year, $9.75 per hour next year and then to be indexed in the years following. New State Laws Take Effect Jan. 1

Some of the new mandates will provide paid sick time to certain workers and another would keep repeat drunk drivers off the road.

If you work for a company that has 50 or more employees and you currently don’t get paid sick time, starting Jan. 1 chances are very good that you’ll start getting it. A new state law that takes effect New Year’s Day in Connecticut mandates that most companies with 50 or more workers allow those workers to accrue paid sick time at a rate of 1 hour for every 40 the employee works. The law, the first of its kind in the country, imposes the requirement regardless of a company’s business demands or ability to pay the sick time.  The companies that are exempted under the legislation include manufacturers and certain tax-exempt organizations. Also, it does not require covered employers to provide paid sick leave to day or temporary workers or …

Some might think this would be a terrible injustice to the 'poor', but how many of you saw the article recently put out by the census bureau about 'the poor'. I was very surprised to see that many families who statistically are in the lowest of incomes have many things that I do not (by choice) -- I-phones, I-pads, big flat screen TV's, more than one car or truck -- and also claim they are never …   more ›

Her restaurant was also voted for multiple times in other categories, including best vegetarian, best desserts and best American. And another, more casual restaurant she opened recently, called Zeeburger, also won for best new eatery. The Spirits of Christmas Past Still Living at The Curtis House Inn

The inn owner recounts delightful ghost stories with a Dickens touch.

Walking through the front door of Woodbury's Curtis House Inn, the evidence of Christmas cheer is everywhere. One is immediately hit with the Dickensian beauty of the place; the antiques and old portraits, the dark wooden tables, lanterns and candles that decorate the hearth beneath the low beamed ceilings. According to locals and ghost hunters, the charm does not stop there. Built as a home in 1736, it has continuously been run as an inn since 1754. It is called the Curtis House Inn because five proprietors of the place were named Curtis, and none were related. Coincidences abound in this charming inn, once named to be among “the top caravansaries in the country” by a long defunct publication entitled Milestones and Memories. Some would …
