Oh dont you worry, were gonna vote, but not going to vote to increase taxes thats for sure. Do withRead More what you have.

I would recommend supporting an increase similar to Ridgefield's which was under 2% (1.97%). If aRead More community like Ridgefield can perform at high levels with an increase under 2%, the Board of Education, in asking for almost twice that is openly admitting that they have installed inefficient management in school administration. Further, the sewer system on the referendum will require municipal funding since it is backed by the full faith and credit of the town of Brookfield and reduces the town's borrowing ability - the advertisement for which indicated it would not impact municipal funding.

You certainly have a way with words. Why does it "suck"?

Any public dock that gets you out over the water a bit. Looking at Norwalk, maybe the one outsideRead More our IMAX theater, or at the Visitor Dock on the other side of the drawbridge. Perhaps the little bridges to Bell Island (in Rowayton) or Canfield Island (east of Calf Pasture Beach), but parking is an issue there. Not sure where you are, but here's a website that tells you all public beach access points in CT: www.lisrc.uconn.edu/coastalaccess/searchtown.asp

Thanks for this article. What a fun idea to go crabbing. Can you recommend any crabbing locationRead More that would be accessible by the public? I'm afraid I'm from an inland CT town and know very little about the waterfront in our fair state.

You are kidding right? DEEP killed the lobster industry by using insecticides in trying to thwartRead More West Nile virus that also killed - killed - lobsters. Lobsters take 5-7 years to get to 1 pound, crabs are mature after 1 year.

1) Start with the child's pediatrician. Basic mental health evaluations are part of every completeRead More 'well-child' checkup. A good pediatrician will be sensitive to your concerns, while assuring that your child receives proper help, as needed. If you can't comfortably speak to your child's pediatrician, you've got the 'wrong' pediatrician! 2) Are there any health care professionals amongst family and friends that you trust? See if they will advise you with discretion. 3) If you have a trusted clergy person in your life who knows your family, speak with them for advice and referrals. 4) There are 'support groups' for parents with children who are mentally ill. Many of them will be happy to speak with you and guide you. 5) Don't forget 'anonymous' 'help lines' for input. You local hospital social worker can also direct you to support and services. Two DON'TS: DON'T try any extreme diets or therapies on your own and DON'T 'not do anything’, ‘hoping/praying’ things will go away. They won't. Trust your parental 'instincts'!

The question of where to turn as a parent is a tough one because as a parent it is difficult to takeRead More an objective view as to whether your child may or may not have a behavioral or mental health issie. A parent may not be attuned to a potential problem or be in denial of an issue. Since behavior disorders in children often present with external signs, frequently a school counselor may be the first person to bring up a behavioral issue to a parent. The reason is two fold. First, as mentioned, a school counselor is not the childs parent so is able to take an objective and clinical view with regards to student behavior. Second, school counselors are trained professionals who have specific knowledge and skills that provide them with an ability to understand when student behavior may be simply a maturity issue, a child having a difficult phase of a temporary nature or whether an issue may be more complex requiring further examination. Pre school and regular school teachers and counselors can provide a lot of feedback to parents regarding their child.

In the U.S., mental disorders are diagnosed based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual .....Read More Soon to be a new manual DSM 5. This will replace DSM-IV. Just like ICD-10 which replaces ICD-9 effective 2014 which has greatly expanded categories and more detailed levels of diagnosis, the new DSM 5 will be the new standard.

I thought everyone on the patch knew that Steve D is a FORMER resident of Brookfield. He does NOTRead More live here. He has no real vested interest in this town just the outpouring of his separation anxiety issues since he moved to Danbury a few years back.
bkmom May 2, 2013 at 10:38 pm
Steven - why don't you become involved in the community as a volunteer like they are asking? Or isRead More that too much to hope for? Community...spirit...volunteer...help....benefit...assist...give of oneself for the good of the town? Oops, yes, you don't speak that language, do you?

We leave the teaching and learning to the teachers and students. What we do is try to enhance theRead More environment in which our children spend 7 hours a day, plus after school activities. And it didn't cost YOU a penny. Alot of volunteer hours go into such efforts, and believe it or not, YOU benefit as well.
