Doc Wollkind Hearings
Brookfield High School (BHS) math teacher Dr. Robert “Doc” Wollkind was put on suspension in December 2010, however the hearings did not begin until January 2011. Wollkind requested that his case be heard by an impartial tribunal, which conducted an inquiry over four days of hearings.
The tribunal eventually ruled 2-1 against Wollkind, who retired from BHS a few days after the decision was released.
bin Laden Killed
The world heard the news that Osama bin Laden had been found and killed Sunday, May 1, 2011 and the next morning the nation and Brookfield were relishing in the fact that the face of America’s enemies had been taken out. Hit-and-Run
A tragic story that nearly made the Most Read list involved the loss of another Brookfield youth, 19-year-old Dong Lin, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident near the Danbury campus of Western Connecticut State University (WestConn). The driver involved in the incident came forward a week later, however Lin’s family is still waiting for justice.
Recount
On the evening of May 14, your editor waited in the Town Clerk’s Office while the registrars double-checked what appeared to be a failure of the first budget referendum by one vote. The education budget failed by a single vote in the preliminary tally, forcing a hand recount of the paper ballots. The recount upheld the failure of the first referendum, increasing the margin to nine votes.
Bobcat Sightings
Through the months of August and September, readers were seeing bobcats all over town — the four-legged furry kind, not the back-to-school crowd — and sending in photos and locations and even one video. By the end of the summer, we began mapping the sightings to see where the cats frequented around town.
