Sting Operation Finds 3 Brookfield Businesses in Violation

Three businesses fined for selling tobacco to underage teens.

The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), in conjunction with Brookfield Police, conducted unannounced inspections of 18 Brookfield businesses on Wednesday, September 22. The Citgo gas station on Candlewood Lake Road (Ronnie's Service Center), Brookfield Shell and Village Liquor Shoppe were issued infractions for violating underage tobacco sales laws.

In sting operations, youths under 18 working with state investigators were allowed to purchase cigarettes in those three locations. The offending businesses were issued an infraction and the first-time fine of $200.

The fine climbs to $350 for a second violation in an 18-month period and $500 for a third. Wednesday's stings were the first conducted in Brookfield in over 18 months, according to Brookfield Youth Officer Gary Gramling, so all violators were given the lowest fine.

A press release issued by DMHAS also noted that, as of October 1, 2008, it is not only illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to purchase tobacco but also to possess or use it in public.

The following Brookfield businesses were found to be in compliance: Little Italy's Deli & Convenience; Candlewood Spirit Shoppe; CVS Pharmacy; Sunoco; Mobil; Brookfield Country Wine & Spirit; Shop Rite; Rite Aid; Royal Tobacco & Convenience Store; Brookfield Deli & Convenience; Brookfield Market; BP; Shell; Brookfield Mobil; Brookfield Lanes Bar.

They really are working hard at driving all the businesses out of the Four Corners area. I wonder who's agenda that is?
