Police Commission Hears About Arrest of One of Two Burglary Suspects, Other Business

Commission discusses burglary suspects, K-9 searches and nominates local heroes.

Brookfield Police Chief Robin Montgomery gave his monthly report to the Police Commission, with only a few topics to cover from the end of 2010

An arrest was made in relation to burglaries reported in November. Kit Marlow, of New Milford, was arrested on December 22 on charges of larceny in the second degree — theft from a building — and burglary in the third degree.

There is currently a warrant out for a second suspect, also from New Milford, however police are withholding the name at this time.

According to Montgomery, the burglaries were spurred by drug addiction.

The Petrillos, a mother-daughter team that saved a man from choking while working a wedding at Fox Hill Inn last August, have been nominated by the Commission for the 2011 Heroes of the American Red Cross Award. The nominees and winners will be recognized at the annual Heroes Breakfast on Friday, March 10, at the Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury.

The Brookfield Police, in conjunction with other area departments, culled Brookfield High School (BHS) inside and out with K-9 units, finding marijuana in one student’s locker.

“It was a very successful search,” Montgomery said. The K-9 search at the high school is becoming an annual event, though this year police went inside the building, classroom by classroom, locker by locker, whereas last year they only canvassed the parking lot.

“I think the familiarity of doing that is really the benefit,” the chief offered, as students will know that random searches could come at any time.

As the department begins to put together their funding requests for the 2011-2012 budget, they are kicking around “some ideas about some restructuring within the building at minimal costs,” according to Montgomery, in order to create more space in the police station without the expense.

The department has also narrowed the well-over 200 applicants to apply for the 31st officer position down to two candidates. With the advice of the Commission (which met in executive session at the end of their last meeting to examine the candidates), Chief Montgomery will be choosing one of the finalists to enroll in the next police academy class, which begins in early February.
