Karma Krispies

Make someone smile by sharing treats. No reason necessary.

I had one of those days recently. You know, the kind of day when it seems like the whole world is out to get you — from the guy who cuts you off in traffic to the store clerk with a bad attitude.

On this particular day, it was so bad I started to wonder if I had a "kick me" sign taped to my back. I couldn't figure out why everyone had such a bad attitude toward me.  Was I just being sensitive? Was it bad karma coming back to bite me?

As the day went on, I got cranky too. I was irritated by the time I made my way to the checkout at Shop Rite. And then the cashier commented on the contents of my cart. "Wow, I guess you're having chocolate for dinner." She went on to say something else about the food I was buying, but I couldn't hear it. I had to pull all of my energy from everywhere in my body to contain myself, to keep my mouth shut tight.  If a person could implode, I would have. A rare hush fell over my kids, as if they knew this woman went too far. I managed a "heh," and a crooked smile because she was cracking herself up with her sarcasm. I paid and left.

In my defense, each of my three girls likes a different type of chocolate treat.  But still — it wasn't that much chocolate. It's bad enough that (because it's a headache trigger for me), I have to live my life without the joys of chocolate in all its delightful forms; I also have to be harassed at the local grocery store about allowing my children to enjoy it?

"What is wrong with people?" I yelled when I got in the car. Then I caught myself halfway through lecturing my children about not commenting on what people have in their carts. "You just don't do it. Whether it's a woman with a cart full of ice cream or a guy with diapers, keep it to yourself. Those are the rules.  Now here, enjoy your chocolate!"

I felt like I needed a treat. That got me thinking; maybe all these cranky mean people need a treat too. Maybe a cookie or a cupcake would cheer them up. Or a Rice Krispie Treat. That would cheer me up.

So, I decided to make some Karma Krispies.  The kids and I can make them together and share them generously.  We can share them just to make people smile.  We'll deliver a few little packages of Karma Krispies just to say "have a great day," or to cheer up a neighbor who needs to smile, or to thank the one who brought our runaway dog back recently.

Care to join me? Go make some Karma Krispies and share them with someone, plant a seed of kindness, with the only goal being to make someone's day.
