This week, Frugal Family scoured our local sources and came up with some great deals. 

We’ve all heard the sad news that our Borders Books in Danbury is closing. We visited the sale to find out what’s really a deal. We’re also highlighting a local bookstore where you can always get a great deal by trading in those books you’ve already read. Plus there are a couple of deals on car care and a special on scrapbooking materials for crafting during our remaining cold winter days, especially helpful if you haven’t done anything with those family Christmas pictures yet.  

1. Book Liquidation

   Deal: Borders on Federal Road, Danbury, is having a store closing liquidation sale. Books are 20 percent off. Items in the Newsprint (magazines) section are 40 percent off. They are not accepting store coupons and there are no returns. You can use your gift cards, but they are not accepting checks.  

   Good Through: Employees were unable to give us a final date that the store will close, but judging from the lines and the way the store is being broken down, it’s probably a matter of weeks.

2. Book Deals Through Trade

   Deal: Paperback Exchange, 774 Federal Road, Brookfield (4 Corners Area) is accepting paperback books in good condition for trade. Get 20 percent of the cover price in credit toward the purchase of other books. All their books are sold for half off the cover price. The balance is paid in half cash and half credit.

   Good Through: Ongoing

3. Free Car Diagnostic

   Deal: Is your Check Engine light on? At AutoZone, 195 Federal Road, Brookfield, they will run the diagnostic for free. It takes about three minutes for an employee to do this test. They then give you a printout of the most probable causes for the Check Engine light to be lit. No appointment necessary.  

   Good Through: Ongoing

4. And a Deal for the Wheels

   Deal: Firestone, 164 Federal Road, Brookfield (203-775-1295), is having a special on tires. Buy three tires and get one free. This deal is good for many cars; check to make sure yours is included.

   Good Through: The end of February.

5. Save on Scrapbooking

   Deal: Jo Ann Craft and Fabric, ShopRite Plaza, Brookfield, is having a special on scrapbooking supplies. All books, papers and accessories are 40 percent off.

   Good Through: February 26.
