Fresh Activities to Warm Up Your Winter
Learn something new, take charge of your health or simply learn to relax with local classes and activities close to home.
Suffering from the winter blues? Tired of the same old activities? Begin the year right by learning something different, exploring a new hobby or starting a new fitness routine. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to explore your interests this week, from fitness and yoga to crafts and community service.
Here’s a look at the classes and activities coming up this week:
- The Handy Hands Craft Club meets today, January 11, from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the Brookfield Library. This month’s club will create a Roly Poly Snowman for ages 5-7. Ages 8-11 are invited to the club at 6 p.m. to create snow crafts including a winter snowflake picture frame. Registration is required, as well as a $5 materials fee.
- New moms can get out for some healthy fun with their babies at Mommy and Me Yoga, held at Yoga Space on Thursday at 11:15 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Moms can enjoy a playful hour of yoga with extra mama-bonding and transition time.
- If you missed the hit movie The Social Network when it was in theaters, here’s your chance to catch it for free. The film is rated PG-13 and will be shown in the community room at the library on Thursday, January 13, at 3 p.m.
- Bingo anyone? Join Center Elementary School's PTO for Family Bingo Night on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $5 per card and refreshments will be provided. One lucky winner will take home four tickets to Schoolhouse Rock Live.
- Learn the basics of woodturning at the Brookfield Craft Center this weekend by participating in their two-day class, Introduction to the Lathe. During the month of January, the center is also offering classes in jewelry making, ceramics and working with fibers.
- Learn the art of deep relaxation, also known as Yoga Nidra at Yoga Space on Saturday, January 15. From 1 p.m until 2:30 p.m., treat yourself to a “waking sleep” which is more restorative and nourishing than actual sleep. The class is free; donations of any amount are accepted. - Head over the YMCA on Sunday, January 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the launch of the fourth annual Lose to Win Program. The 12-week program features fitness coaching, nutrition programs and team challenges to help you reach your fitness goals.
- Petco will be celebrating National Adoption Weekend with free seminars on pet care and adoptable pets on site. Catch a workshop on training and caring for your pet or meet cats in need of loving homes on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The weekend closes with low cost vaccinations. Bring your dog, cat or ferret in from 3 p.m. to 5p.m. No appointment necessary.
Coming Soon:
Teens will have an opportunity to reach out and do good this month by participating in the Fourth Annual Teens for Jeans Drive. DoSomething and Aéropostale, partnering with over 600 homeless shelters in the US and Canada will collect new and gently used jeans to be donated in the local community. Interested teens can learn more about getting involved by attending an informal meeting at the Brookfield Library on Wednesday, January 19.
