Brookfield Hiker's Guide: Happy Landings Farm

Open fields, a wide, blue sky and quiet serenity makes this spot a daily hike favorite.

I've been driving past Happy Landings for years, not really sure what was there other than a couple of windmills and some hay. Years ago a friend had raved about the spot along Whisconier Road. Her advice was simple. Park your car and walk. You'll love it.

It took me years to pull over and check it out, but I'm so glad I finally did.  Different from my typical hikes through the woods or by the lake, the terrain is easy and the open views are soothing. The wide open fields stretch out in front of you with a variety of birds weaving around from the tall grass into the surrounding trees. Happy Landings is now my favorite spot for a daily walk or run with my dog, who, like me, truly can't get enough of this place.

My advice for you is simple as well. Park your car in the small lot and pick a grassy path to follow. It doesn't matter too much which one you choose. They all intersect at some point and they all lead you through the rolling hills to the high point of the open space, which provides a lovely view. The highpoint isn't really that high at all and it doesn't require any steep uphill climbing. It is high enough to see over the trees at the back of the fields and into the hills far in the distance.

Tailor the length of your walk or hike to suit your energy level. If you want a quick walk, cut across a field. If you want more, head to the back of the of the 75-acre open space, where you'll find a narrow path leading into the woods, or loop around the back fields. The path through the woods is also a loop, but it is slightly overgrown and a bit rocky. You'll also find a pond full of ducks on the left side of the first field in the front of the property.

Happy Landings is free from litter and very clean, so when you stop by for a visit, please keep it that way by cleaning up after your dog.

The farm is currently maintained by Bill Stuart of Stuart Family Farm in Bridgewater. Find more information here on Patch, including the current plans for the farm, the windmill restoration and the bobolinks that call Happy Landings home.
